Netflix Sets New Record with ‘Birdbox’

Since its Dec. 21 premier, “Birdbox” has been viewed by more than 45 million subscribers—making it the most watched Netflix original of all time. Many people have experienced a flood of memes, recommendations, and stories via social media featuring the Sandra Bullock thriller over the last week and a half. And all of this attention points to a very positive future for the streaming service, and its original content.

On Friday, Netflix released a Tweet on its official account, writing, “Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched ‘Bird Box’ — best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!”

The streaming giant is notoriously protective of their viewer numbers, and the announcement caught many by surprise. It seems that Netflix execs were too excited by the results to keep the information to themselves.

“Birdbox” follows Sandra Bullock as she plays the harrowed mother of two young girls tasked with guiding them safely through a post-apocalyptic nightmare. As if that’s not complicated enough, they’re forced to navigate the hostile landscape blindfolded. Instead of a stereotypical movie monster, the world is overrun by a malevolent force that kills anyone who looks directly at it. Complete with intense scenes and a grade A production crew, “Birdbox” is another example of a box office caliber performance available via the Netflix platform. With recent concerns over licensing costs, streaming services are turning to premium original content to retain their customer base. “Birdbox” is only a glimpse of what can happen when companies like Netflix invest in their own content instead of trying to maintain a library of licensed movies and shows.
